Surge Protectors

Why risk your household appliances. In seconds, a lightning strike can produce powerful electrical surges that often exceed 100,000 volts. Lightning surge can enter your home through the electric line, telephone line or the TV signal wire. When these surges enter your home, they can damage or destroy thousands of dollars of electronics and appliances. Today’s sophisticated electronics are sensitive and highly susceptible to damage caused by an electrical surge.

With surge protection equipment supplied by Wabash County REMC, damaging lightning surges are stopped right at the surge protector. To protect your home, we recommend you follow these three steps:

Step #1 $4,95/mo. Meter Base Surge Protector
We recommend you start by having the REMC install a meter-base mounted surge protector at the metering point, to protect the incoming electrical line. This device will give you good protection for the major appliances, such as the range, refrigerator, washer and dryer. The $4.95/mo. rental fee includes the installation cost and all maintenance cost.

Step #2 High Quality Plug Strips
For the more sensitive equipment such as a computer and an expensive television, we recommend an extra layer of protection be installed. For the computer, we sell a high-quality plug strip surge protector that also protects the incoming phone line to the computer.

For the high value television, we sell a high quality plug-strip surge protector that also protects the TV signal wire.
Installed at each TV and computer to be protected, the Tripp-Lite plug strip includes protection for the electric plug, the telephone line and the TV signal wire. With a sale price of $69.00 each, this device can be used to protect either your high cost TV or computer.

Step #3 Well Pump Surge Protector
Since lightning surges are always seeking a path to ground, the well pump lying in the water is a perfect target. Not only is it more susceptible to damage, its replacement cost is usually more than $1,000.
Proper protection of a well pump requires the installation of a wire-in surge protector. In order to reduce the change of a lightning surge getting round the surge protector, it’s important to install this device adjacent to the well pump control box. The well pump surge protector is sold at al cost $120.00 and must be installed by your electrician.
